Swimming Pool Neptunium

Bespoke aluminium profiles shine in renovated Brussels swimming pool

After a thorough six-year renovation, the Neptumium swimming pool in Schaerbeek reopens its doors to the public, now fitted with custom-made aluminium profiles. The pool, which first opened its modern gates in 1957, has undergone a complete transformation to be both modernised and preserved, while retaining the clean lines of its original modernist design.

Deforche Construction Group - Forzon (subcontractor to Strabag) fully engineered the facade and glass roof while respecting the architectural value of the building. The primary steel structure was retained and new aluminium and glass was installed on top of it. Aliplast, as a supplier of custom-made aluminium profiles, was selected as the system house for this project. The choice of Aliplast was logical given their years of experience since 1984 in developing and producing aluminium profiles, including extrusion, electrostatic powder coating and roll-in thermal alleys, all carried out in-house. This complete in-house production guarantees not only extensive expertise and in-depth product knowledge, but also smooth, reliable and high-quality delivery of Aliplast products.

"What sets us apart from competitors is that everything is done in-house, which allows us to respond quickly to customers' needs and short delivery times. This is a huge asset in today's construction world, where timing is crucial for making a building wind- and watertight," said Alexander Morel, support project manager at Aliplast.

The Neptumium pool, originally built in 1950 and inspired by the "style Pacquebot" of the 1930s, presented an architectural challenge for Aliplast. However, the complexity of the project, with its clean horizontal lines and repetitive shapes reminiscent of a huge ship's bow, was enthusiastically embraced by the team.

One of the challenges was the surface treatment of the profiles, as the pool involved a demanding environment with a lot of chlorine. The specific length of 9 metres for the roof construction profiles and the architect's wish for a hidden wing required precise attention and solutions.

Aliplast managed to deliver at short notice and also provided engineering support for the project. The result is a proud moment for the Aliplast team, who showed their worth in this project of name and fame. The success of this project motivates Aliplast to develop further and take on more such challenging projects, highlighting their outstanding achievements over the past 20 years.
